What Is It Like To Live In Clarendon Hills Illinois?

While most of the villages which make up the near western suburban market are small, Clarendon Hills is minuscule.  This town of less than 9,000 residents is located south of Ogden Avenue and west of Route 83, entirely in DuPage County.

Clarendon Hills is so small, that the entire town is serviced by just two elementary schools.  In fact, two of the three neighborhoods in Clarendon Hills are described by the name of the elementary school which services them.  The Walker Grade School neighborhood is an in-town neighborhood located north of 55th Street and south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks.  This neighborhood contains the vast majority of downtown Clarendon Hills.

The Prospect Grade School neighborhood is located north of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks and south of Ogden Avenue.  On the Prospect Park campus, both Prospect Grade School and Clarendon Hills Middle School reside.  The core portion of the Prospect Grade School is located south of Chicago Avenue.  Local people consider this section to have convenience in a “walk to” capacity.  The section of the Prospect Grade School neighborhood located north of Chicago Avenue contains the Hinsdale Golf Club and larger lot sizes than the balance of Clarendon Hills.

The majority of Clarendon Hills is serviced by the District 181 Elementary Schools and the District 86 Hinsdale Central High School.  These schools are commonly referred to as the Hinsdale Schools.

A special neighborhood called “Blackhawk Heights” is located in the northwest section of Clarendon Hills, just south of Chicago Avenue.  The area is comprised of traditionally designed homes, many of which have been raised and replaced with new construction.  This area is in the jurisdiction of the Westmont Elementary School and High School District.

Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale are sister cities in many ways.  Beyond the sharing of the school districts, there are other complimentary arrangements that exist in different capacities.  For example, during the summer months in Clarendon Hills, there is an event called “Dancing in the Streets”, which is held on Tuesdays.  Similarly, Hinsdale holds it’s “Uniquely Thursdays” event on Thursdays.

Clarendon Hills was designed by a land planner named Olmstead, who designed Central Park in New York City.  The streets curve and wind.  By design, it is difficult to drive through the town unless you know it.  Also, most of Clarendon Hills does not have curbs on the streets.  This is a design characteristic for the purpose of creating a semi-rural ambiance.

All in, Clarendon Hills is a quintessential Midwestern town, which contains all the characteristics families look for in a commuting community. Interested? Click here to search all of the homes for sale in Clarendon Hills.
