As reported this week in USA Today, there is an interactive guide one can use to compare area hospitals and their corresponding mortality rates. It can be used to review hospitals in your zip code and compare the mortality rates against multiple area hospitals.

The review on the hospitals in our near western suburban neighborhood included: Hinsdale Hospital, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and La Grange Memorial Hospital which are located in Hinsdale, Downers Grove and La Grange, respectively.

Here’s how they faired:

• Heart Failure: National 30 Day Death Rate is 11.1%. Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital: 10.3%; Hinsdale Hospital 11.1%;  La Grange Memorial Hospital 8.0%.
• Heart Attack: National 30 Day Death Rate: 16.1%. Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital: 14.5%; Hinsdale Hospital 15.7%;  La Grange Memorial Hospital 14.6%.
• Pneumonia: National 30 Day Death Rate: 11.4%. Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital: 10.0%; Hinsdale Hospital 9.2%;  La Grange Memorial Hospital 9.7%.
