Mini trends have been developing as we wrap up 2007

From my microcosm of the housing universe, here’s what I have seen change in home technology as 2007 comes to a close.

Home Theater.  Five years ago, home theaters were all the rage. They’re still cool today, but the trend is away from them more toward a media room. The big difference is that a media room, unlike a home theater, does not have a singular purpose. A media room is incorporated in the living space of a home where the residents may watch television, read or sip a bottle of Cabernet while they are entertained.

Microdisplay-based television. HD televisions and flat panels are hot. Prices have been coming down and are expected to dive another 25% before the end of 2008. Stock up.

Smart house lighting. Imagine driving up to your house at night and pressing the garage door opener remote control in your car which, in turn, switches on the interior lights on the first floor, brightens the outdoor lights and turns off these lights behind you unless you "permanently" switch them on.
